Philosophy Wire: Bacteria, non-living things, definitions...

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2014-05-01]: Inspired by natural materials such as bone - a matrix of minerals and other substances, including living cells - MIT engineers have coaxed bacterial cells to produce biofilms that can incorporate nonliving materials, such as gold nanoparticles and quantum dots. [1] It seems impressive. But every living things is consisted of non-living things. It is that "something else" which makes them alive that is impressive... Definitions limiting our judgement. Definitions expanding our publications. Would there be science with no definitions? Can there be life with them?
