Philosophy Wire: BBC, fake documentaries, fake-ecology…

Travel Trend Year AheadPhilosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2012-12-29]: The new BBC wildlife series Africa will make it clear when animals have been filmed under controlled conditions. The move (not too of essence to be honest – Who will go to the site of a documentary after he has watched it? And who guarantees that the site will tell the truth? Will the same policy apply to documentaries shot by others and then bought by BBC?) comes a year after an episode of Frozen Planet, featuring a polar bear with her cubs, was criticised. Some shots in that programme that viewers assumed came from the Arctic, were actually filmed in a Dutch zoo!!! [source: BBC News] Fake documentaries have troubled again Harmonia Philosophica in the past (see here). It looks like money and the fashion of ecology are too much for the TV channels’ owners to ignore. What sells will continue being broadcasted. Fake or real, it matters not.
