Philosophy Wire: IBM, a map, religions and revolutions

1EC31962E04F9D0A9DD979775EEF29ECPhilosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2012-01-20]: IBM scientists managed to create the smallest world map with dimensions 22 x 11 μm [source: web news]. They claim that the method they developed MAY open new ways in nanotechnology. Science is often consumed in such vague promises. New methods which MAY SOMEDAY SOMEHOW result in a “REVOLUTION” in the way we do things… Why do people like hearing such promises? Why do they believe them? Why do some prefer them against other similar and more practical promises (i.e. promises by religions to provide comfort here and now) ?
