Philosophy Wire: A 19 euro computer! Is that what we need?

CB49DE3A80D14709402EA9CC31AF6969Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2011-12-28]: A new computer with a cost of 19 euro (!!) is launched by the Cambridge University [source: BBC News]. If the only problem of humanity was the access to computers, then that would solve all the problems we have. However our problem today is far more simple and fundamental (and difficult to solve): we lack humanity. And some extra RAM will not make us better… Children with parents who have some money, have already bought a computer. Children of poor families who will get that computer, will certainly NOT start reading mit.eu Online lessons or start programming with Visual Studio 2010 once they get it… Drug dealers provide drugs for free in the beginning…

PS. Many claim that this computer will help children start programming. Are they serious?!?!? A kid who does not have money to buy a computer, will start programming or simply start surfing in the Internet once he gets it? In the era of Altair it is true that you made your computer. But there is an important difference: back then Altair was the TOP of the available technology!
