Philosophy Wire: Protection of sharks, hypocrisy of humans

Blue-shark-018Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2011-11-20]: Environmental organizations argue that the measures agreed by ICCAT for the fishing of tuna and the protection of a shark species (which is considered collateral damage as it is often caught in the same nets by accident) [source: web news]. The protections of other species many times go hand-in-hand with the “I do not want to be in the same place with the animal I want to protect”. Who wants to be in the same waters with a shark (especially an endangered one)? We have seen “friends of the environment” in outdoor activities protesting against the wild bees who bother them while doing their picnic. The “protection of the balance of nature” is much different from “keeping 10-20 sharks alive in the seas somewhere far away from me, in order just to be called ecologist”…
